Mansion to Flat

This two-story flat on Pierce Street is not historic but it is located on the site of a 2½ story mansion owned by Elizabeth A. Bixler, wife of David Bixler, an early pioneer and wealthy attorney with extensive land holdings in the Sacramento Delta. The property was sold in 1921 after Mrs Bixley’s death, and the mansion was demolished. An apartment building (1924) on the corner of Union and Pierce Streets but this lot remained vacnt until this flat was built tin 1948.

This map from 1905 shows the extent of the estate, 148 feet along Pierce Street and 206 feet along Union Street, ten times the size of a typical residential lot. There are three outbuildings and a water tank.
