 CASE STUDIES

Old Ship Saloon

This project proposed demolishing the Globe restaurant and constructing a seven-story, 33-unit apartment building that would wrap around two sides of the historic building on the corner, the Old Ship Saloon. The saloon sits on the site of a beached ship, the Arkansas, which was used as a saloon during the Gold Rush. The Globe building was erected in 1911 as a “horse shoeing” shop. It subsequently had a variety of uses, such as a pest control company and a neon sign shop through the mid-1960s. It was vacant until 1978 when a succession of restaurants occupied the space.

I found that the Globe building was not historic and that the design of the project would not affect the historic integrity of the Old Ship Saloon or the historic neighborhood. The project was completed in 2018.
