Victorian Reborn

Historic Resource Evaluation (HRE)

The purpose of HRE is to determine if a building is historic, i.e., meets the criteria under the National Register of Historic Places, the California Environmental Quality Act, or local ordinance.

I found this Victorian to be eligible for listing on the California Register of Historical Resources as an example of an 1870s Italianate even though it underwent many changes. Built-in 1875, it lost its character in 1939 when its original wood cladding was covered with asbestos siding and it was stripped of its gingerbread detailing. Thousands of Victorians suffered similar fates but by the 1970s, a renewed appreciation for Victorian architecture led to many buildings being restored, although not all were done with historical accuracy. In 1980, San Francisco Renaissance completed a workmanlike restoration.
